So, can red light therapy reduce belly fat? YES! Some evidence suggests that RLT may be effective in reducing belly fat or assisting in weight loss. As for weight loss, red light therapy is thought to work by stimulating the production of mitochondria.

Numerous scientific studies support the efficacy of RLT in reducing stubborn fat, including a 2014 study published in the International Journal of Obesity. In this study, 56 participants were given four weekly RLT treatments over eight weeks at the end of the study period; those who had received RLT treatments showed significant reductions in waist circumference and hip circumference compared to those in the placebo group.

Another study published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine in 2016 found similar results, with participants who received RLT treatments showing significant reductions in abdominal adiposity (fat tissue) after just four weeks. Researchers believe increased blood flow and lymphatic drainage caused by RLT may help explain these results. Another study concluded that RLT reduced the size of abdominal fat cells in rats. At the same time, another found that RLT increased the number of mitochondria in human fat cells, which could lead to increased fat burning. Yet another small study showed that participants exposed to red and near-infrared light for 30 minutes three times per week for four weeks lost an average of 1.3 inches from their waistlines.
