How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red light therapy, or RLT, is a type of phototherapy that uses red and near-infrared light wavelengths to penetrate the skin’s surface. This type of light has been shown to boost energy levels, improve mood, reduce inflammation, treat wrinkles, help muscle and joint pain, and speed up wound healing.

Can Red Light Therapy Reduce Belly Fat?

So, can red light therapy reduce belly fat? YES! There is some evidence to suggest that RLT may be effective in reducing belly fat or assisting in weight loss. As for weight loss, red light therapy is thought to work by stimulating the production of mitochondria.LED light bed female

Mitochondria are often referred to as the “powerhouses” of our cells because they produce the energy our cells need to function properly. By stimulating the production of mitochondria, red light therapy is thought to help the body burn fat more effectively. To put it another way, once the wavelengths hit the subcutaneous fat layer, they convert into cellular energy that leads to improved circulation and most importantly, accelerated metabolism of stored fat cells. In other words, RLT essentially tricks your body into thinking it’s exercising, when you’re just relaxing under a LED light panel!

numerous scientific studies support the efficacy of RLT in reducing stubborn fat, including a 2014 study published in the International Journal of Obesity. In this study, 56 participants were given 4 weekly RLT treatments over 8 weeks at the end of the study period, those who had received RLT treatments showed significant reductions in waist circumference and hip circumference compared to those in the placebo group.

Another study published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine in 2016 found similar results, with participants who received RLT treatments showing significant reductions in abdominal adiposity (fat tissue) after just 4 weeks. Researchers believe that the increase in blood flow and lymphatic drainage caused by RLT may help explain these results. Another study concluded that RLT reduced the size of abdominal fat cells in rats while another found that RLT increased the number of mitochondria in human fat cells, which could lead to increased fat burning. And yet another small study showed that participants who were exposed to red and near-infrared light for 30 minutes three times per week for four weeks lost an average of 1.3 inches from their waistlines.
