Sculptology in Northern California

Fat-freezing, body sculpting, body contouring, CoolSculpting. You’ve likely heard those terms at some point, but did you know they’re all just another way to say cryolipolysis? Whew! We know that’s a mouthful! So we’re going to break it down for you and explain why cryolipolysis (or whatever you want to call it!), is such an amazing way to get rid of unwanted fat and boost your confidence. As the top CoolSculpting Elite provider in the Bay Area (actually, we’re number one in all of California!), Sculptology’s team is second to none, and we are always happy to answer all your questions in person during a complimentary consultation.

What is Cryolipolysis For?

Cryolipolysis is just the scientific term for “fat-freezing!” When you break it down, cryo = icy cold + lipolysis = chemical decomposition of fat, so… fat-freezing! The trademarked name for the unique technology is CoolSculpting, and the story behind CoolSculpting is just as amazing as the results Sculptology can achieve for our clients. Over a decade ago, in 2008, two doctors, Dr. Dieter Manstein from Massachusetts General Hospital and Dr. Rox Anderson from Harvard Medical School decided to research more about a well-known phenomenon involving popsicles. Yes, popsicles!  It was well-documented that kids who enjoyed icy-cold popsicles often formed dimples in their cheeks. This phenomenon was common enough that it earned the name “popsicle panniculitis.” The two doctors/researchers also looked into a documented case where a woman rode naked on her horse in cold weather (don’t ask us why!), causing fat loss from her inner thighs! Dr. Manstein and Dr. Anderson theorized an innovative hypothesis: perhaps freezing temperatures were crucial for fat loss.

They set out to test their theory and developed the CoolSculpting technology with precisely controlled applicators. They found that cold temperatures kill fat cells faster than they can affect other types of body tissue, such as nerve, skin, or muscle cells. So when kids indulge in popsicles regularly, there is an inflammation of the fat cells in the children’s mouths, ultimately leading to a loss of the fat cells. The team conducted successful clinical studies, first targeting the flank (known as those “love handles”), and earned CoolSculpting’s first FDA clearance in 2010. Now, the fantastic fat-freezing technology has received nine approvals from the FDA, meaning nearly any body part can be treated. Then, in 2020, Allergen, coolsculpting’s parent company, redesigned the already-amazing applicators, making them even better. Thus, CoolSculpting Elite was born!

How Does Cryolipolysis Work?

So, how does cryolipolysis work? Well, we have some excellent news for you. You don’t have to submerge yourself in a pool of popsicles or ride a horse naked in the snow – which would be difficult in the San Francisco area anyway! Instead, you can visit one of Sculptology’s two Bay Area locations, and our team will assess your goals and whether CoolSculpting Elite is the fat-reduction solution you’ve been looking for. Our complimentary consultations are always free of pressure and judgment, and we create custom treatment plans for every client to fit their goals.

During your CoolSculpting Elite treatment session at Sculptology, an applicator will be suctioned to target your stubborn areas of subcutaneous fat (the kind you can pinch). Since it’s non-surgical, anesthesia is unnecessary, but you may experience sensations of tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, or cramping; however, these sensations quickly subside as the area becomes numb.  Your expertly qualified CoolSculpting Elite technician will then massage the treated area following the procedure to reduce side effects and increase the fat-freezing process. The cryolipolysis process kills the fat cells, and since they’re then “dead,” your white blood cells attack them, converting them to triglycerides which are then metabolized by your liver and expelled out of the body through the lymphatic system. In as few as four weeks, the treated area is more contoured and sculpted, achieving about a 20%-25% reduction in fat. All thanks to the science of cryolipolysis!
